Frequently Asked Questions

What safety precautions should be taken with propane gas?

Propane is a reliable and safe fuel; and like many fuels, it is flammable and must be handled properly.

  • If you smell a propane odor, call for service before attempting to light an appliance.
  • Read the lighting and operating procedures before using a propane appliance.
  • The pilot light is a safety device. If it does not light or will not stay lit, call for assistance.
  • Do not force an appliance control, read the instructions, call for assistance.

When should I be concerned about the amount of propane in the tank?

The tank should be refilled when the tank gauge shows 20 percent remaining.

What is a degree-day?

In a heating day, it is any day that the average temperature falls below 65 degrees. It is calculated by adding the day's high and low temperatures together, dividing by 2, and subtracting from 65 degrees (daily high + low, divide by 2, subtract 65 degrees). By using this formula, fuel consumption can be estimated.
