Meter Tampering/Energy TheftWho pays? When a thief tampers with a utility meter to steal energy, other members must pay for the stolen energy. Our employees are trained to detect signs of meter tampering, and we will prosecute those involved. Under Kentucky law, unauthorized use of power through meter tampering or unlawfully reconnecting electric service disconnected by Warren RECC could result in a fine of up to $10,000. The cost of energy stolen or equipment damaged may also be recovered. It is not necessary to be caught in the act in order to be prosecuted for meter tampering. If you suspect anyone of meter tampering, report it to your Cooperative. The information will be kept confidential, and you could help save money for yourself and other honest members. You may also be saving someone's life because of high-voltage hazards. If an electrician or contractor working in your business needs access to the meter, contact Warren RECC for instructions. No one, except Warren RECC employees, is authorized to cut a seal or remove a meter. By checking with us first, you can prevent unintentional involvement in meter tampering investigations.
