September 21, 2023 (Bowling Green, Ky) Warren RECC kicked off the 2023 Lineman’s Rodeo today at Phil Moore Park. The annual event is held in different locations around the state each year. Warren RECC previously hosted the event in 2012.
The Lineman Rodeo recognizes and rewards excellence in safety, skill, and knowledge in their field and provides an opportunity for line workers to showcase their talents. The Rodeo also cultivates a sense of pride in the trade and kinship among participants and attendees alike.
“The preparation and training that go into the rodeo are invaluable for our apprentices as well as our long-term journeymen. Being able to show off their skills and share knowledge amongst their colleagues is a wonderful way to not only strengthen but grow their profession. We are delighted to be able to host this important and fun event right here in our service territory,” said Dewayne McDonald, President and CEO of Warren RECC.
This year, more than 130 linemen will compete in individual and team events, including transformer and streetlight changeout; hurt man rescue; and “mystery” events, where the challenge is announced when the event begins.
According to Mallory Wafzig of Kentucky Electric Cooperatives, “The Lineman’s Rodeo is not only a tremendous display of safety standards and skills, but it also provides a unique opportunity for the rest of us to watch line workers in action. In most circumstances, safety concerns would prevent this closeup view of their work, but the rodeo encourages it. And it never fails to impress.”
The rodeo will take place both Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd, with awards presented at a closing banquet on Friday afternoon.
